a little tail Houston, TX

Tonight's the night! The prints are on the wall and I'm finishing up a few loose ends before the show begins. I'm spent like a student credit card and I think I've shaken whatever it was that took me down yesterday afternoon/evening. Really looking forward to just relaxing with a beer and hanging out with family, friends and strangers. Come on out and see what's up. Hope to see you there!

he who goes up Houston, TX

Damn, it's been two weeks since my last post. Don't think I've ever gone that long before.
Trust me, I'm not sitting on my laurels. And the laurels are thankful.
Preparations for the upcoming show are in high gear, my office is full of frames, prints and mat boards. I'm starting to feel the effects of stepping out of my comfort zone but it feels good. A sweaty little cocktail of self affirmations, humility, anal retention, fear, some wtf? and a twist of 'where the hell is my screwdriver?'

Mark your calendars, the opening is March 19th from 7-10pm. Hope to see you there.

In addition to the exhibit, Laura and I are offering a toy camera workshop on Sunday, March 21 from 2 to 5. Our demos will be Holga-centric but a lot of techniques and modifications can be applied to all toy cameras. We'll be sharing a lot of info like how to prevent/enhance light leaks, prep your Holga to take 220 and have twice as much fun, using close-up filters (I'll be giving away a set of diopters as a door prize) and more. After some hands-on fiddling we'll head out for a photo walk 'til the sun sets. After all is said and done, we'll meet up again on April 18th for a casual critique and follow-up. Laura's got the big rundown here.

We have two registration options: $100 for those with their own camera and film or $165 which includes a Holga 120N camera and five rolls of film.

Options
    Workshop Only $100.00
Workshop + Holga 120N Camera and 5 Rolls of Film $165.00

over the moon Houston, TX

Damn this winter. Granted, it's Houston and in comparison we've gotten off easy.
It's all relative I guess, but the older I get the less patience I have for the cold.
I'm over it.

To keep warm in the meantime, I've ordered a copy of Tread's foray into self publishing, Blurfect. If you know his work (and you should) then you know this is a treat for your peepers. If you don't know his work, use that link a few words back and fix that.

And while we're on the topic of magazines, the new LightLeaks is out, guaranteed to be a winner.

Finally, as I'm in the linking mood, here's a source of constant inspiration and wonder. Johnathan Saunders is in serious cahoots with his muse presenting images and words that never fail to light a fire.

warming up Tomball, TX

That time of year again.
A new team, new coach, new dynamics, new rules, back on the pitcher's mound.
First practices show a better organized coach with a strong grasp of fundamentals.
Yeah, I'm a little giddy waiting for the first game.
With games and practices comes the inevitable schedule juggling.
This ultimately results in us seeing less of him for a short while, but we've got Spring Break and the summer to look forward to. That gives us plenty of time to warm up.

Mondays.
Mondays can be hard.
Mondays can make us want to act out.
When Mondays push us that far, we have to apologize.
Sometimes we have to apologize twice to get the point across.

awkward moment Houston, TX

As I mentioned before, the ball is rolling on Weekends, Dreams and Other Plastic Memories, a toy camera based exhibit of work from myself and Laura Burlton with a 'focus' on children and childhood included as part of FotoFest 2010.
Huge thanks to Laura, Sheila and Carissa for inviting me to share some space with Laura in The Havens Center.
The reception is March 19 from 7 to 10pm and is open to all. We'll have a Facebook event page up soon, and I'll continue to post relevant info as it develops.
I'll be showing 20+ images from Alternating Weekends and yeah, that feels really good. A lot more work ahead to get to the prints on the wall but it's all a labor of love as they say.
