a matter of perspective

inside outside Houston, TX

Trying to explain the price of gas to an eight-year old seems a fairly simple task.
Putting it in relation to the cost of Bakugan packs and LEGOs, it's pretty straightforward.
Explaining why, because of that price, I'll have to stop making the cherished biweekly Thursday trips, 2-3 hours round trip to spend two hours running around as dad and son, is an entirely different equation.
Especially when they forget we talked about it twice.
And it's Thursday.

I try not to compare the then and now, but I do think of it to remind myself sometimes of who and where I am. I remind myself of the absence, the fear, the frustration, and I swear I will do everything in my power to never create those same feelings.
But without that benchmark, without that knowledge, without that fulcrum, all the noblest intentions don't mean much. 'Not there' is 'not there'. Phrases like 'point of diminishing return', 'quality of time' and 'per barrel' don't play on the emotions field.
