![]() devil in the kitchen Houston, TX By now I'm sure everyone is painfully aware of the progressive loss of Polaroid. I've been silent about it, well, simply because there's nothing that can be done in the sight of big business. Yes, I've signed the petition, but I know that it's not going to do much, ironically in the um...'big picture'. I've also been silent because I can't help but feel a sadness that goes beyond losing a tool of expression. For me it really is like losing a member of the family. I mentioned previously the family scanning project I'm in the middle of. Well, a good part of that archive - the part that relates to our childhood, the part that symbolizes the 70s, the part that fueled the beginning of my understanding of 'instant gratification' - was shot with an SX-70. So many memories spat forth from that magical machine to develop in front of our eyes, and we never got tired of it. We still don't. My brother received a new One-Step as a Christmas gift, and I just replaced the MIA family SX-70 with an Alpha 2 from eBay for $1.49. With the loss Time Zero, it does take some effort to use the disappearing 600 film with it (not to mention a subjective sacrifice in character), but that effort is more than worth it. Knowing I have at least part of our next gen captured in that special spectrum of color feels good. Damn good. In the meantime, I snap up as many packs when and wherever I can, stockpiling for the inevitable apocalypse. The day is nigh when a ten sheet pack of 600, currently available for + or - $12 at Wally World, will start hitting $50 or more on evilBay. Eventually, only those after market gouges will be available. After that, even those will be out of date, slowly running out until there's nothing left. Yes, the Fuji pack film is still available...for now. But that dilutes my punchline: If you knew you had the last sheet of Polaroid film...what would you photograph? | |
