everything but net

Home Hoop Deer Park, TX

I've mentioned here before what an odd place my childhood home is. Lots of both bad and good within those property lines. This basketball goal is one of the landmarks of that little patch of memory. Not that I played much, it was more for my brother, but it's been there for as long as I can remember. Same backboard, same rim, same industrial pole our dad welded together. Not long after it was put up, someone, the next door neighbor (also the Mayor) I believe, backed into the pole, giving it an uncorrected west-coast lean. During one of the few serious freezes I busted my ass but good right in front of that goal. Smashed my glasses, scarred my face and pulled myself upright on that rusty sentinel. The net is long gone but the memories remain. However, what I believed eternal is soon to come down. My brother is about to develop the vacant lot on which this pole is perched, and this icon will be the first to go as they prepare the foundation. I'm proud and excited to watch him move forward on this endeavor, but I have to admit a little tug on the heartstrings to see that sucker fall.

Mark your calendars for WTCD 2007.

I've got two prints up along with some other Houston bloggers and Flickrites in the 600sqmi show at the M2 gallery in the Heights. Runs from Sept. 5 to Oct. 7.

I also have a print hanging in the Center for Fine Art Photography's Alternative Process exhibit, currently showing in Fort Collins, CO through September 22.
